Five PR Tips For India’s Prime Minister

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, known to be soft-spoken and a little reclusive, appears to be trying to revive a plan to meet with journalists more often as part of the government’s overall efforts to be more responsive in the face of criticism on corruption and inflation. The idea of having regular confabs was floated last year but appeared to have been dropped after gathering with newspaper editors led to some unwanted news stories. In February, the PM had a televised presser, but since then he’s been largely silent except for speeches at official dos. In an interview with NDTV that aired on Sunday, Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram suggested Mr. Singh needed to be more visible.

The FBI’s Double-Edged Sword of Public Relations

To say that the FBI scored a huge PR victory in nabbing James "Whitey" Bulger is an understatement. The capture of Whitey after 16 years is PR gold, starting with that first tweet the FBI heroes sent on Thursday morning. The murderous Boston crime boss was finally in custody, his victims and their families, finally able to contemplate some justice. But the PR payoff also brings to the surface what has been lurking since the now-disgraced FBI agent John Connolly was exposed as a rogue agent. That is, that regardless of what ends up coming out in Whitey’s trial in terms of which new FBI names he might bring up, the FBI still suffers from an image that was badly tarnished decades ago, after many members of Boston’s FBI department were found to have looked the other way when it came to Whitey’s crime spree.

Social Media Aid Vancouver Police In Identifying Rioters

Vancouver police say they cannot keep up with the unprecedented number of tips and photos of people who torched cars, looted businesses and pounded on officers in a riot following the Canucks loss to Boston in the Stanley Cup finals. Just five days after the June 15 riot that plunged the Canadian city into three hours of chaos, police had received 3,500 e-mails that included 53 videos, 708 photographs and 1,011 hyperlinks to social media sites such as Facebook.

Duke Nukem PR Firm Dropped Following Online Review Row

US games publisher Take 2 has parted company with public relations firm The Redner Group, following Twitter comments concerning Duke Nukem Forever. Redner's contract was terminated after it said journalists who gave the game a poor review would be blacklisted. Take 2's subsidiary, 2K Games, said it did not share "or endorse" the views. Duke Nukem Forever, which has been in development since 1998, was criticised for its embarrassing character, dated design and poor controls. The row erupted when Redner Group's founder, Jim Redner, published an angry tweet as the negative reviews of Duke Nukem Forever started to come in.
